Water Wonders - Wading for Water Mites and More
April 29, 2006
Students, teachers, and interested citizens along with Park volunteers and staff
participated in the first water mite workshop in GSMNP led by Drs. Andrea Radwell
and Paul Davison. Participants collected a rich assemblage of water mites and other
invertebrates from the Middle Prong of the Little River. The event provided an
opportunity for participants to learn about water mites, an abundant and diverse,
but understudied group of arachnids found in freshwater habitats. The collection
will become part of the ATBI and is expected to yield undescribed species.
